How To Increase Your Storage In Animal Crossing: New Horizons
More stuff. Less stress. Let's get into it.
Running out of room is a rite of passage in ACNH. You've got furniture you're "saving for later," seasonal items you can't part with, and approximately 47 variants of the same shirt. Your pockets are full. Your house storage is full. You've got things laying around all over the island, I know this because I'm describing myself here.
Good news: you (I?) can fix this. There are two types of storage to worry about, your pocket inventory (what you carry) and your home storage (what's in your house), and you can expand both! Read on whether you're just trying to figure out how to get more pocket space or if youre looking to upgrade your home storage after the most recent update.
Expanding Your Pocket Inventory
Out of the box, your pockets hold 20 items. You can upgrade this twice using Nook Miles at the NookStop Kiosk inside Resident Services.
Upgrade 1: Pocket Organization Guide- 5,000 Nook Miles. Takes you from 20 to 30 slots.
Upgrade 2: Ultimate Pocket Stuffing- 8,000 Nook Miles. Takes you from 30 to the final alloted amount, 40 slots.
Both are one-time purchases and kick in immediately. If you're still early in the game, grab the first one as soon as you can! Going from 20 to 30 slots feels like a completely different game.
Important: These upgrades are per player, not per island. If you have multiple characters, each one needs to buy them separately.

Expanding Your Home Storage
Your home storage starts at 80 slots and grows every time you add a room to your house. Each new room adds 40 slots, and you can add up to 6 rooms total (a main room expansion + 5 additional rooms).
To get started: talk to Tom Nook inside Resident Services and select "About my home." He'll walk you through what's available and what it costs. It's not cheap, but it's worth it.
With Ver. 3.0, storage got a serious upgrade, your home can now hold up to 9,000 items, and for the first time, that includes trees, shrubs, and flowers. If you're on the latest update, you've got a lot more breathing room than you used to.
A Few Storage Tips While You're At It
-
Any wardrobe or storage furniture piece lets you access your home storage from inside your house, you don't have to be standing next to a specific spot.
-
Store, don't drop. Leaving stuff on the ground is how islands turn into chaos. When in doubt, put it away.
-
The storage UI lets you filter by category (furniture, clothing, materials, etc.), use it, it saves so much time.
-
Keep a storage shed nearby while decorating. If you're working on a new area of your island, plop a storage shed right next to you while you work. It's basically like having your whole house inventory in your pockets. Just a little hack that saves you a million trips back home.

Now that you've got room for everything, you're going to need something to fill it with. You know where to find us. 😉
